Is there a certain kind of therapist someone suffering from ScizoAffective Bipolar Disorder?

Zelda asked a question 💭

In 2022, I had a life changing traumatic event that I have seen many Therapists and PHP treatment for 6 weeks. The last was a Trauma Therapist. With EMDR therapy in 01/2025 the initial trauma emotionally lessened. With the trauma I went through emotional and physical disability’ March 2026 was the last time I had a one on one appointment. I was having severe medical problems and was depressed from that. In March 2026 I had a neck surgery and lower back pain. My therapist said I don’t want you to return and talk about the pain your in. I have been out of therapy since and I’m 1 1/2 months out since back injuries. All the injuries were from extreme torture. I have a massive ID issue.

What kind of therapist is best suited for someone with schizoaffective disorder who has also experienced trauma, physical challenges, and identity issues?

First, it's really encouraging that the EMDR work helped ease some of the trauma. That shows real strength and progress, even when things have been incredibly hard.

What kind of therapist is best suited for someone with schizoaffective disorder who has also experienced trauma, physical challenges, and identity issues?

First, it's really encouraging that the EMDR work helped ease some of the trauma. That shows real strength and progress, even when things have been incredibly hard.

Given everything shared, a few types of therapists and approaches may be worth exploring:

- Psychiatrist – Can manage medications alongside therapy, which is especially important for schizoaffective disorder
- CBT Therapist – Helps identify and reshape unhelpful thought patterns, including those tied to identity and trauma
- Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialist – Supports daily functioning and rebuilding life skills
- Clinical Social Worker – Can coordinate care across multiple needs, including physical recovery and community support
- Case Manager – Helps connect all the different services together so nothing falls through the cracks

The identity concerns mentioned are something a skilled CBT or psychosocial therapist can specifically help work through over time.

It may also be worth looking into a holistic or assertive community treatment program, which considers the whole person — physical recovery, mental health, and daily life together.

When searching for a new therapist, asking specifically about experience with schizoaffective disorder and trauma history is completely reasonable and important.
