Supporting someone who doesn't recognize their schizophrenia can be challenging. Instead of trying to convince them or argue about their condition, focus on:

- Using a calm, clear tone of voice
- Speaking slowly with simple language
- Avoiding sarcasm or whispering which may trigger paranoia
- Validating their emotions without reinforcing false beliefs
- Asking how they would like to be supported When they express concerning thoughts or hallucinations, try supportive responses like:

- "That sounds really scary, how can I help?"
- "I'm here with you when you're ready to talk about it"

Focus on strengthening their connection to reality and gently redirecting to enjoyable activities rather than challenging their beliefs. Remember to take care of yourself too - supporting someone through these challenges can be emotionally exhausting.

Most people with schizophrenia are diagnosed during their teenage years or as young adults. For men, diagnosis typically occurs between ages 18-25, while women are often diagnosed between ages 25-35.

Men are slightly more likely to develop schizophrenia than women. While less common, schizophrenia can also develop in childhood or later in life. About 20% of newly diagnosed individuals are over age 45. When schizophrenia develops in children, it tends to be more severe and more challenging to treat.

Hearing voices, also called auditory hallucinations, is when someone hears sounds that aren't actually there, even though they feel completely real. It's a very common experience, affecting about 75% of people with schizophrenia.

These voices can sound different for each person - they might be loud or quiet, male or female, and can come from inside the head or seem to be in the environment. Some people hear one voice while others hear several voices that may talk to them or to each other. Scientists think this happens when the brain's speech and hearing systems become confused. When people hear these voices, the same parts of their brain activate as when hearing real people talking. This suggests the brain might be misinterpreting its own thoughts as external voices.

The good news is that hearing voices can be treated with antipsychotic medications. While treatment may not always make the voices disappear completely, it can usually make them quieter and more manageable.
