Dealing with a loved one who wanders to strangers' homes can be really frightening and stressful. This behavior may be linked to symptoms like delusions or hallucinations that feel very real to them. Here are some steps that may help:

- Stay calm — Reacting with panic or anger can make things worse. Approach them gently and without confrontation.
- Don't argue about their beliefs — Instead of challenging why they went somewhere, focus on how they're feeling. Try saying something like, "That sounds really overwhelming, let's get you somewhere safe."
- Create a safety plan — When things are calm, work with them to set up a plan for what to do if this happens again.
- Contact their care team — Let their doctor or therapist know this is happening. It may signal a change in symptoms that needs attention.
- Call 988 — If there's a safety concern, the mental health crisis line (call or text 988) can offer guidance.
- Consider a psychiatric advance directive — This legal document lets your loved one outline their care preferences ahead of time, giving everyone more clarity during a crisis. If the situation becomes immediately dangerous — for them or others — don't hesitate to call 911. When you do, be specific: mention that your loved one has schizophrenia and describe exactly what's happening. This helps first responders approach the situation as a mental health concern rather than a legal one.

Taking care of yourself through all of this matters too. Connecting with a support group or therapist can help you manage the emotional weight of caregiving.
